Named for Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy, The Admiral Fiztroy Inn is located at 398 Thames Street in Newport, Rhode Island, in the Newport Historic District.
Edwin, who had studied meteorology in the Royal Navy, was undoubtedly strongly influenced by the tradition of practical weather science of which Admiral Robert FitzRoy and the American, Matthew Fontaine Maury, were the most distinguished contemporary exponents.

It is named after Robert FitzRoy, who commanded the HMS Beagle and was later the Governor of New Zealand.
In his role, he was only responsible to the Governor (first Robert FitzRoy and then George Grey) and the Colonial Secretary (Andrew Sinclair) in Auckland.
Lyell's interpretation of geologic change as the steady accumulation of minute changes over enormously long spans of time was also a central theme in the Principles, and a powerful influence on the young Charles Darwin, who was given Volume 1 of the first edition by Robert FitzRoy, captain of HMS Beagle, just before they set out on the voyage of the Beagle.
The area was first populated at least 9,000 years ago, and was first recorded by Captain Robert FitzRoy during his voyage on the HMS Beagle in the early 1830s (best known for its impact on the naturalist Charles Darwin).
