He attended Robert Gordon's College (Aberdeen; 1950–63), becoming school captain and gaining the Otaki Shield for the pupil outstanding in character, leadership and athletics.
Educated at Eton, he went on to serve in the 10th Royal Hussars in the First World War, attaining the rank of Captain and being awarded the Military Cross.
Educated at Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen and in South Africa where he lived 1947–1954, he worked as a draughtsman.
