In August 1642 his Warwickshire estate was looted by Parliament forces from Coventry (ironically, under the command of the new Lord Brooke).
On his dismissal Sir John Burgoyne befriended him and allowed him the use of an 'exempt' church at Wroxhall; and he was afterwards under the protection of Robert Greville, 2nd Baron Brooke.
As this suggests, he was of Cavalier sympathies, and an important counterweight locally to Robert Greville, 2nd Baron Brooke, lord of the manor of Penkridge, who was an important leader of the Puritan and Parliamentary cause, who was killed during the siege of Lichfield Cathedral in 1643.
In 1630 he established, in conjunction with Robert Greville, 2nd Baron Brooke, John Pym, and others from the group of Puritan entrepreneurs, a company for the settlement of the Providence Island colony on what is now Isla de Providencia in the Caribbean Sea, part of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, a department of Colombia.
