2 unusual facts about Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh

Congress of Laibach

Against this view Castlereagh once more protested in a circular despatch of January 19, 1821, in which he clearly differentiated between the objectionable general principles advanced by the three powers, and the particular case of the unrest in Italy, the immediate concern not of Europe at large, but of Austria and of any other Italian powers which might consider themselves endangered (Hertslet, No. 107).

William Harbord, 2nd Baron Suffield

Although he had a strong family link with Castlereagh, who had married Caroline's sister Lady Amelia Hobart, the two men were not close politically.

Congress of Troppau

Therefore she sent no plenipotentiary, but was represented by Lord Stewart, ambassador in Vienna and the half-brother of the Foreign Secretary at the time, Viscount Castlereagh.

Cruggleton Castle

On that date Earl of Moray wrote Sir Patrick Vaus to intervene between the Flemings and his brother Lord Robert Stewart, Commendator of Whithorn and later Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney also an illegitimate son of James V of Scotland.

Mariota, Countess of Ross

King Henry IV of England sent his own emissaries the following year to negotiate an alliance against Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, the Guardian of Scotland who was controlling Euphemia and the earldom.

North Cray

North Cray briefly became the centre of international attention in August 1822 when Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh, the Foreign Secretary, committed suicide at his country home Loring Hall.

Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of March

He also bore the ecclesiastical titles of Bishop of Caithness, his grant confirmed by Pope Paul III in January 1542, an office previously held by his maternal uncle Andrew Stewart, and Commendator of St Andrews Cathedral Priory.

Robert Stewart, 4th Lord of Aubigny

Robert Stewart (or Stuart) (c. 1470–1544), Lord of Aubigny, Count of Beaumont-le-Roger, was a French soldier belonging to the family of Stewart of Darnley.

Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany

Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany (c. 1340 – 3 September 1420), a member of the Scottish royal house, served as Regent (at least partially) to three different Scottish monarchs (Robert II, Robert III, and James I).

After the death of his brother King Robert III, Albany ruled Scotland as Regent, king in all but name.

Robert Stewart, of Irry

Though the 9th Baron was unsuccessful in his attempt to establish his claim to the Barony of Ochiltree (created for his ancestor in 1543), in 1793 he was created 1st Viscount Castle Stuart, and then in 1800, the Earl Castle Stewart of Co. Tyrone.

His evidence is based on a pedigree drawn up by James Stewart for his father George Roe Stewart of Termon and also in Canon Grainger's pedigree of the Edwards family of Castlegore.

His home outside Stewartstown, Co. Tyrone - Irry, sometimes also spelt Eary - was later renamed Stuart Hall by his grandson, the 7th Baron Castle Stewart.
