From 2001 to 2002 Ongaro worked at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia as a crew doctor, supporting in particular the flight to the International Space Station (ISS) of Italian astronaut Roberto Vittori.
On April 15, 2005, Phillips, along with his fellow crew-members Sergei Krikalev, and Roberto Vittori launched to the ISS aboard Soyuz TMA-6.
He served as backup Flight Engineer to European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Roberto Vittori for the Soyuz TMA-6 taxi mission to the ISS in April 2005.
