The honking style was fading somewhat by the early 1950s, but the honkers themselves suddenly found themselves providing rousing solos for doo wop groups; an example was Sam "The Man" Taylor's eight-bar romp on The Chords' 1954 "Sh-Boom." Bill Haley also used honking sax men Joey D'Ambrosio and Rudy Pompilli on his rock and roll records, including "Rock Around the Clock."

Several artists have recorded their versions of "Flip, Flop and Fly," including Johnnie Ray (1955), Bill Haley and His Comets from the album Rock Around the Clock (1956), Downchild Blues Band (1973), The Blues Brothers from Briefcase Full of Blues (1978), Jerry Lee Lewis and Ellis Hall (1999), this version being used in the soundtrack of the animation movie Chicken Run.
He also appeared with the band in most of their motion picture appearances, including Rock Around the Clock and Don't Knock the Rock.
With music by Lothar Olias and lyrics by Peter Mösser, the song is an up-tempo number in the style of early rock and roll hits like "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley & His Comets.
According to the book Rock Around the Clock by Jim Dawson, Cedrone had been unable to attend the session rehearsal and was uncertain what to play for the first instrumental break in the song.
A later claim by Myers (cited in John Swenson's biography Bill Haley: The Daddy of Rock and Roll) that he played drums on "Rock Around the Clock" has been debunked by the existence of an official recording session document indicating the drummer was Billy Gussak.
