The East Suffolk Elementary School, built as a Rosenwald School, is a one-story, Colonial Revival style, brick school with a central auditorium flanked by classrooms.
A one-room Rosenwald School opened in Marion in 1926 for African-American children.

Since its construction in 1929 as a Rosenwald School and before the Little Rock Integration Crisis of 1957, Dunbar was the site of the Negro School of Industrial Arts, the Paul Laurence Dunbar Junior and Senior High School (the city's "black school", as opposed to Little Rock Central, which was for white students), and Dunbar Junior College.
The settlement's Rosenwald school was one of 354 schools for African Americans built in the early 20th century with financial support from the Julius Rosenwald Fund.
