He graduated from the Westwood Campus of Yorkshire Coast College in Scarborough, with a National Diploma in Drama before studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, later known as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating with a masters degree.
After school he went on to study orchestral trumpet at both the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
McQuarrie trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) in Glasgow and soon became a highly popular actor amongst Edinburgh theatre goers before moving to London where he has played prominent roles in more controversial, new dramas by playwrights such as Sarah Kane and Anthony Neilson, amongst others.
Born in Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland, he had an early ambition to design cars but when he realised that the employment opportunities in that field were limited he decided to become an actor after his A-levels and trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
He trained at the College of Dramatic Art, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Glasgow, where, inter alia, he played roles in Brendan Behan's The Hostage and The Zykovs by Maxim Gorky.
