One of the photos used in the opening montage / theme song for the television series Cheers (1982–1993) was taken in Craigville in 1937, by photographer Russell Lee of the former Farm Security Administration.
The collection originated with the Abilene Fine Arts Museum in 1937, and has grown since its inception to include recent acquisitions by James Surls, Andy Warhol, David Bates, Helen Altman, Russell Lee, Bob Stuth-Wade, Vernon Fisher and others.
Plattner conducted oral history interviews with the project's key photographers—Clyde Hare, Harold Corsini, Esther Bubley, Russell Lee, James P. Blair, Richard Saunders, Elliott Erwitt, Sol Libsohn, and Arnold S. Eagle—and co-authored and edited Witness to the Fifties, published in 1999 with the help of a grant from the Howard Heinz Endowment.
