Jurgens then studied at the University of California at Berkeley and Sacramento Junior College (now Sacramento City College) before accepting an engagement with his own orchestra at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco in 1933.
As a young boy, he collected artifacts in and around where he lived; but he did not go on his first excavation until he was at Sacramento Junior College (1932-34).

After limited scholarship offers coming out of high school, he enrolled at Sacramento City College, eventually drawing attention from Boise State University head coach Dan Hawkins, and transferred to join Boise State's 'tailback by committee' approach as a short yardage and goal line back.
Kurt studied art at Sacramento City College, SFAI, Cornell University and UC Davis where he received his Master of Fine Arts Degree studying with Robert Arneson, Roy DeForest, William Wiley and Manuel Neri.
