The origins of Saint Botolphs church in Boston have their roots in the former priory church of the Benedictine monastery.
The parish church is dedicated to Saint Botolph and dates from the early to mid-13th century; it was described by Pevsner as "memorably intimate".
In 1612 Cotton left a tutoring position at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and became the minister at Saint Botolph's Church in Boston, Lincolnshire.
