The origin of the name is unclear, though it is believed that it was derived from the name of Saint Vitus, who is often depicted with a feather.
The theme of the municipal coat of arms is the martyrdom of Saint Vitus, derived from a picture in the town's St. Vitus Church (see gallery below).
On the other hand, his obsessive search for music that displays the qualities he regards as intrinsic to rock music leads him to champion such relatively obscure bands as Saint Vitus, Bloodrock, Sproton Layer and The Sylvia Juncosa Band.
Name of the neighborhood derived from Saint Vitus (Sveti Vid in Serbian) - Serbian word "vidovdan" means "the day of Saint Vitus", thus the English translation of the settlement's name would be "the Saint Vitus day's settlement".
The forests in the west and south from the Boubín Mountains were owned from 10th century by the Saint Vitus Church canonry of Prague (Note: This was the ancient canonry of Prague. St. Vitus Cathedral did not yet exist at this time.) Territorial disputes between the Duchy of Bohemia and the Duchy of Bavaria in the 11th century resulted in the loss of much of the local population.
The monastery proper, dedicated at first to Saint Vitus, later to Saints Stephen and Michael, was founded by Bishop Hitto von Freising in approximately 811–835.
