Northwards, its range extended through the eastern Caucasus, from the Apsheron Peninsula to the mouth of the Samur River in the actual Azerbaijan-Russia border, extending to Araks.
Junayd was prevented from returning to Ardabil, so he lived at Shirvan where he died in a local skirmish near the Samur River in what is modern Azerbaijan, where he was buried.

The boundary is divided into three sections - the mountain, piedmont (runs along the river Samur) and lowland (Samur River delta in the Caspian Depression).
