Adams State University is a small state-supported liberal arts university in Alamosa, Colorado, U.S., in the San Luis Valley and home to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
Fort Garland was established in 1858 to protect settlers in the San Luis Valley, then part of the New Mexico Territory.
It enters the southwestern corner of the San Luis Valley from the west near Conejos and joins the Rio Grande from the west approximately 15 mi (24 km) southeast of Alamosa.
