Later he went to study on the University of Physical Education in Budapest.
His father died in an accident in 1904, whereupon the eldest brother, Viktor, became the head of the household and managed the education of Lajos, sending him to the Medical University of Budapest.
In 2006, Sankofa received his Maestro’s degree with honors from Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary.

He was awarded as honorary doctor of the University of Valencia (1983); Life for Years Prize (1994); Semmelweis University's Golden Ring; Pro Sanitate Commemorative Medal (1995); Knight's Cross Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (2001).
