There are several temples dedicated to Bhuvaneshwari across India, however, the most important (Shakti Peetha) is located in Nainativu (Manipallavam) – off the shore of the Jaffna Peninsula in Northern Sri Lanka.
Shakti Peethas are shrines that are believes to have enshrined with the presence of Shakti due to the falling of body parts of the corpse of Sati Devi, when Lord Shiva carried it.
The mythological texts recognize four major Shakti Peethas: Tara Tarini (Stana Khanda), near Berhampur; Bimala (Pada Khanda) inside the Jagannath Temple (Puri); Kamakhya (Yoni khanda), near Guwahati; and Dakshina Kalika (Mukha khanda) in Kolkata.
A commonly accepted list of Shakti peethas and their famous temple complexes includes: Jwalaji (Himachal), Tara Tarini (Berhampur, Orissa), Katyayani (Chattarpur, Delhi), Kamakhya (Assam), Kali at Kalighat (Kolkata, West Bengal), Naina Devi (Himachal), Guhyeshwari Temple Devi (Kathmandu, Nepal), Vishalakshi Temple (Varanasi).
