After his retirement, Winter graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a degree and fell back into football, working for Grimsby Town before moving to Watford and serving as community director and then deputy C.E.O.
Following his retirement from football he studied computer visualisation at Sheffield Hallam University, graduating in 2004.

She has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by University of Derby (1998), Sheffield Hallam University (2001), Kent University (2010) and the Open University (2005) and was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1999 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

He received a knighthood in 2001 for services to local government in Derbyshire followed by Honorary Doctorates from Sheffield Hallam University in 2002, Cranfield University in 2005 and Derby University in 2006.
