Godman had met Taylor about two years prior when Taylor had been a dinner guest at the St. Joseph's Convent and Academy in Adrian, Michigan, where Helen had been attending school.
In 1983, he moved to Siena Heights University where he served as head coach of the men’s team from 1983 to 1988 and the women’s team from 1986 to 1988.
