Today there are 300 Paipai (or Jaspuy Paium as they call themselves) living in two communities: Santa Catarina in the Sierra Juárez and San Isidoro to the south near Trinidad Valley.
Often called simply "Los Valles" by the people of Oaxaca, it is a geographical and cultural region consisting of three river valleys between the Nudo Mixteco, the Sierra Juárez and the Sierra Madre del Sur.

In Baja California, the province includes the forest and chaparral belts of the Sierra Juarez and the Sierra San Pedro Martir (but excluding their desert slopes to the east), coastal areas south to about El Rosario, and Guadalupe Island.
