Amongst other gravestones is that of another Covenanter, Robert Grierson, who was killed for his faith in 1685 (not to be confused with Sir Robert Grierson a notorious persecutor of the Galloway Covenanters).
In The Raiders, Faa is placed as a contemporary in south-west Scotland with of Grierson of Lag during the Killing Times, while in His Dark Materials he is moved to southern England in an alternate, somewhat Steampunk universe into a time which is apparently contemporary with our own.

The 'Laird of Lag's Tomb' is located at the surving "Dunscore Old Kirk"burial ground, as is the grave of Captain Robert Riddell of Glenriddell, a close associate of Robert Burns.
