Stead was a strong rival to the two major Sussex patrons, Sir William Gage and the 2nd Duke of Richmond.
This work was completed by Sir William Gage, 7th Baronet who inherited the house in 1713 and the house is set in typically open parkland.
On 20 August 1735, Sackville again captained Kent to victory against Sir William Gage's Sussex at Sevenoaks Vine.
