In the Middle Ages Demir Kapija was known as a Slav settlement, under the name of Prosek, while today's name originates from the Turkish reign, meaning "The Iron Gate".
The place, originally called Ruda, may have developed out of an old Slavic castle and a church built in approximately 1100 by Piotr Włostowic of Dunin, though no documents are saved.
In other contexts it can also refer to Slavic people identifying themselves with the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania in present-day Lithuania and Belarus, as well in Ukraine, western Russia and parts of Poland.
