4 unusual facts about Solemn League and Covenant

Corporations Act 1718

The Act stated that members of municipal corporations were no longer required to take the oath against resistance nor to sign the repudiation of the Solemn League and Covenant.

Garmouth, Moray

A plaque in the village commemorates his signing there of the 1638 National Covenant and the 1643 Solemn League and Covenant shortly after coming ashore.

Reformed Presbyterian Church of Australia

In former times, church law required members to believe that the Solemn League and Covenant were still binding and forbade them from participating in government because the Constitution does not explicitly make the Australia an officially Christian country; these provisions have been repealed.

Swineshead, Bedfordshire

When it was undergoing restoration in 1846, a copy of the Solemn League and Covenant (signed by the then Rector of Swineshead) was discovered in the roof where it was perhaps hidden by the cautious rector of the time.
