Clifton Beach is a town located approximately 25 km southeast of Hobart on the South Arm Peninsula on the outskirts of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
With the outbreak of World War II, the Department of Defence acquired land near South Arm close to the mouth of the Derwent River on the eastern shore, from a Mr. Courtland Calvert and his sister in September, 1939.
The town is situated on the eastern side of a thin Isthmus that connects the South Arm peninsula to the mainland.

In 1893, Ward began construction of the Frederic & Charlevoix RR Co. a logging railroad interconnected at Frederic, Michigan with the Michigan Central Railroad Mackinac Division and extended 42.66 miles to East Jordan, Michigan, formerly known as, South Arm on the shores of Lake Charlevoix, formerly known as Pine Lake.
The Highway starts at the Eastern Outlet near Mornington then travels south changing name to Rokeby Road and again to South Arm Road.
This bypass has replaced the original route between South Arm and Hobart which passed through Bellerive and Rosny.
It is formed by the Clarence River where it splits into the South Arm and North Arm at the small village of Brushgrove then reforms at the town of Maclean.
