She was Interim Director of the Royal Institution of Australia (RiAus), and is currently chair of the Board of the South Australian Museum.

On 18 August 2011 Premier Mike Rann announced that Dr Lomax-Smith had been appointed as the new chair of the South Australian Museum board.
He had a very mutually fertile 50-year collaboration with Norman Tindale of the South Australian Museum and University of Adelaide.
