He sat as a Member of Parliament for Boston, South Lincolnshire and Rutland and served as Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire.
Bennett was of Irish parentage, born in 1809, the son of Major William Bennett formerly of the 69th Regiment of Foot, and the grandson of Richard Bennett who was murdered during the Wexford Rebellion of 1798.
Interestingly, at that very same time O'Halloran's younger brother, Captain (later Major General) Henry Dunn O'Halloran (1800-71), 69th Regt., posted at New Brunswick, Canada, was conducting a significant study of the language and customs of the indigenous Mi'kmaq people.
