2 unusual facts about St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad


Richmond, Quebec

The St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad opened between Montreal and Portland, Maine, on April 4, 1853 and was purchased four months later and absorbed into the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR)'s system.

William Pitt Preble

When the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad was incorporated in 1845 Preble was named its President, and he negotiated with governments in England, Canada and the United States to obtain rights of way and other concessions needed to accomplish construction and begin operations.


Portland–Montreal Pipe Line

This rail line was built in the 1850s by the Atlantic & St. Lawrence Railroad which was purchased by the Grand Trunk Railway shortly after completion.
