The building from the end of the 16th century at first served as a hospital of St. Nazarius and was blessed as a church by the Koper Bishop Paolo Naldini in 1706.
In the fifth century relics of St Nazarius were translated to Embrun, which had supported a bishop since the fourth century; Embrun became a noted place of pilgrimage.
