The Staffordshire Yeomanry Museum is housed in the attic floor, and features uniforms and artefacts of the Staffordshire Yeomanry.
He was also commissioned into his native county's Staffordshire Yeomanry in 1885, and promoted Major in 1898.

It was once the site of Elmhurst Hall a large country residence which once hosted King Edward VII when he visited Lichfield for the centenary of the Staffordshire Yeomanry in 1894.
He was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Staffordshire Yeomanry and a Captain in the 3rd Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers and served as an Aide-de-Camp to the Governor General of Canada from 1876 to 1883.
