She has acted with Sean Penn and Robert Duvall in Colors, a film about gangs in Los Angeles, with Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Phillips in the critically acclaimed drama Stand and Deliver, and had the lead role in the made-for-television movie Sweet 15, portraying a young Mexican American teenager preparing for her quinceañera.
The Bell and San Juan Story followed in 1989 featuring a variety of well-known artists such as writer/director Jacobo Morales (whose film Lo que le Pasó a Santiago is the only Puerto Rican film nominated for a Best Foreign Movie Oscar), Cordelia González (Born on the Fourth of July, Mambo Kings), Rosana de Soto (Stand and Deliver, La Bamba) and others.

In 1994, he collaborated with Tom Musca, writer and producer of Stand and Deliver and the well-known playwright Mark Kemble (Names) to produce Flight of Fancy (2000), winner of Best Film with a Latin theme at the Hollywood International Film Festival and Best Film at The Renaissance City Film Festival in Rhode Island, both in 2001.
She is best known for her roles in Stand and Deliver, for which she won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female, and in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country as Azetbur, the daughter of Klingon Chancellor Gorkon.
