The Vortex started as a jazz club in 1987 and was located in Stoke Newington Church Street.

His only surviving brother Jonathan, merchant of Throgmorton Street, partner in Gurnell, Hoare & Co, built a mansion in what became Clissold Park, across Stoke Newington Church Street from the family home in Paradise Row.
