Ahlon Township was once home to Thiri Mingala Market, Yangon's largest wholesale and retail market until 2010, when the Yangon City Development Committee began preparations to move the market to Hlaing Township in the suburbs, to allow for lane expansions on Strand Road and expansion of Asia World's wharves.
The Padma Oil Company Limited, formerly Burmah Eastern Limited, is a Bangladeshi-state owned petroleum company with its head office in Strand Road, Chittagong.
It crosses the city in a west-east direction and runs parallel to the Yangon River.

On the night of 31 May 1941, aircraft of the German Luftwaffe dropped four high-explosive bombs on the North Strand Road area, killing 34 and injuring 90.
