Built by the German army in 1942, it consists of 18 underground blockaus which are being restored since 1990 by an association called "Les Amis du Suffolk RĂ©giment".
He served in the British Army during World War II, first in the Suffolk Regiment, later in the 1st Airborne Division in which he commanded the 89th Field Security Section (Intelligence Corps) at Arnhem.

He was educated at Wellington College, a military public school attended by his father, and did his national service with the same regiment his father had served in, the Suffolk Regiment.
