CFU was initially formed as a supporters group to represent the views and interests of Cambridge United's fanbase, and to allow the club's continued operation.
In January 2003 three of the trust's founders (Mark Dingwall - editor of the Rangers fanzine Follow Follow, Colin Glass and Gordon Semple, later joined by Stevie Tyrie) decided to form a trust, after attending an open day held by Supporters Direct, an umbrella body for supporters' groups.

Thanks to Torcida Split, many other Torcida organized supporters' groups were created, among them rapidly growing and acting Górnik Zabrze fans, called Torcida Górnik, and FK Novi Pazar fans, called Torcida Sandžak.
The group Virtus Fans, founded in 2006, have a friendship with antifa supporters groups all over the world: Livorno Calcio, Ternana Calcio, Cosenza Calcio, Lanciotto, Celtic Glasgow, Wrexham, Olympique Marseille, Rayo Vallecano, FC St. Pauli, RSV Goettingen 05, TSV 1860 München and Bubi Merano (futsal).
