He was then traded to the Swift Current Broncos and then spent a full season with the Prince Albert Raiders before briefly playing in the Central Hockey League with the Oklahoma City Blazers for their playoff run during the 2001-02 season.
Later that year he was selected 6th overall by the Swift Current Broncos in the 2011 CHL Import Draft.

The trophy is named in honour of four members of the Swift Current Broncos who were killed on December 30, 1986 in the Swift Current Broncos bus crash.
Ruff's younger brother, Brent Ruff, was one of four teammates killed in a bus crash while playing for the Swift Current Broncos in 1986.
