In 1999, the Hong Kong Government designated Tai Ho Stream as the 63rd Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the discovery of the Ayu (plecoglossus altivelis) in the river, which cannot be found anywhere in the world except for waters in HokkaidÅ, and Hong Kong.
