The title of the film is taken from a talent show put on by the hospital's inmates, which was named after the Wampanoag word for the nearby Taunton River.

Planning began in the early 1950s for a new bridge to ease the congestion of the nearby Slade's Ferry and Brightman Street Bridges, as well as to carry the proposed Cape Cod Expressway over the Taunton River.
He became famous, particularly in Portugal, because of his interpretation of the inscriptions present on the surface of Dighton Rock, a boulder on the shore of the Taunton River, south-eastern Massachusetts, attributing the carvings to Miguel Corte-Real, a Portuguese navigator who left Lisbon in May 1502 on an exploration trip to the western Atlantic, never to return.
By the late 1950s with the passing of the landmark Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, the location of the new highway was shifted south and included a high-level bridge across the Taunton River with a route through the center of Fall River through the Narrows and onto New Bedford and Cape Cod.
