He resided in a mansion later owned by Ted Field located at 1244 Moraga Drive in the gated community of Moraga Estates in Bel Air, California.
Fanning had three children with her first husband, Marshall Field IV, a son, film producer and entrepreneur Ted Field, and two daughters.
His second marriage, to Katherine Woodruff (later Fanning), lasted from 1950 to 1963 and produced three children: Frederick "Ted" Field (b. 1953), Katherine Field Stephen and Barbara Field.

At the Indianapolis 500 Hall, along with fellow CART boardmen Roger Penske, Pat Patrick, Teddy Mayer, Ted Field, and Robert Fletcher were not allowed to compete in the race due to the race being part of the USAC National Championship.
