After buying a loft in what was to become Soho He got a call from Vice president of Columbia records Jack Gold offering him a job as staff producer at Columbia Records and connected there with fellow producer Teo Macero who led him to Miles Davis.
It contains recordings from the October 4, 1981 concert in Tokyo, some of which had appeared on We Want Miles, including the original version of the track "Jean-Pierre", elsewhere edited by producer Teo Macero to remove the first twenty-five seconds of introduction, consisting primarily of a guitar riff and tumbling percussion sounds.
The pieces were produced by associated producers: the first six tracks were produced by Teo Macero and Mike Berniker; track 7 and 8 by Berniker and Cal Lampley.
