Sweeney made minor appearances in several major films, including The Crying Game (1992), The Snapper (1993) The Butcher Boy (1997), and Angela's Ashes, and made his stage debut in the 1989 Dublin production of The Iceman Cometh at the Abbey Theatre.
She also starred opposite Colm Meaney (The Commitments, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) as Sharon Curley in Stephen Frears' 1993 film The Snapper as a young woman from a working-class Dublin family dealing with an unintended pregnancy.
As a sophomore in 1993, he was the snapper for quarterback Charlie Ward and a member of the Seminoles' Bowl Coalition national championship team that defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers 18–16 in the Orange Bowl.
