Aside from the references to the school's location and benefactor, the etymology of 'Swale' can be explained by reference to the local stretch of water, The Swale, which runs between Sittingbourne and the Isle of Sheppey and also lends its name to the local Borough Council.
Bolton Beck is a tributary of the Swale which passes underneath a small bridge at the north of the village.
They are one of, if not the last waterfalls on the Swale before the river reaches the lower country grounds of the Vale of Mowbray, their normally medial size can be affected easily, much like the rest of the Swale, by heavy rain and flooding, making for dramatic viewing.
