As a result of his keen interest in exotic succulents, he was selected by Sir Thomas Hanbury to manage his acclimatisation garden, the Giardini Botanici Hanbury at La Mortola, near Ventimiglia on the Italian Riviera.
It is home to the Giardini Botanici Hanbury, or Hanbury botanical gardens, created in the 19th century by Sir Thomas Hanbury.

Sudeley was a younger son of Thomas Hanbury-Tracy, 2nd Baron Sudeley, and his wife Emma Eliza Alicia Dawkins-Pennant, daughter of George Hay Dawkins-Pennant, of Penrhyn Castle.
He was an essential partner to his brother, Sir Thomas Hanbury, in selecting specimens for and establishing the Giardini Botanici Hanbury at La Mortola, now maintained by the University of Genoa.
