In 1878 he went to Philadelphia and took a medical course at Jefferson Medical College.
While he was recuperating at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, his second wife, Kate Stanwood Cutter Pillsbury, died suddenly.

Gibbon received his AB from Princeton University in 1923 and his MD from Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia in 1927.
In 1918, he enrolled in the University of Puerto Rico and later transferred to Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia where he studied medicine, earning his medical degree in 1924; after graduating he established a medical practice there.
He received his medical training at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, and in 1881 began the practice of medicine.
Since then he has left the practice and is currently working part time at the Los Alamos Women's Clinic and the Taos Women's Health Institute as well as being Clinical Professor at New Mexico University and Research professor at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
