On December 11th U.S. Representative Pete Viscloskey (D-IN) repeated his support for the project while Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott declared his opposition.
McDermott was briefly mentioned by polls as a potential candidate in the 2010 United States Senate election in Indiana to succeed the retiring Evan Bayh, but dropped out, and endorsed fellow candidate Brad Ellsworth.
