Brookland takes as its basis Thomas Pope’s "Rainbow Bridge", a bridge that was proposed for the East River nearly a hundred years before the construction of John Roebling’s Brooklyn Bridge, but which was never actually built.
Lucy, Countess of Downe died 6 April 1656, and was buried at Cubberley.

His grandfather Sir William Pope of Wroxton Abbey, near Banbury, was created Earl of Downe in the kingdom of Ireland, and died on 2 July 1631.

Cuthbert and his brother had financed the new venue by making five actors (William Shakespeare, John Heminges, Augustine Phillips, Thomas Pope, and William Kempe) as a group, half-sharers in the profits of the house: this arrangement seems to have solidified the structure of the group, helping cement the position of the Chamberlain's Men as the preeminent troupe in London.
The Mansion stood on the site of the former Holy Trinity Priory, one of the two houses of Augustinian canons in the town, which was dissolved and became the property of Sir Thomas Pope (friend of Thomas More, Wolsey's successor as Chancellor), before being demolished to make way for the new brick mansion built by Edmund Withypoll.
