Profilin is one of the most abundant actin monomer binders, but proteins such as CAP and (in mammals) thymosin β4 have some functional overlaps with profilin.

The protein is identical in aminoacid sequence to Thymosin beta-15A, product of the TMSB15A gene, although synthesis of the two proteins is independently regulated.
