In 2006, Haller (along with Athletic Director Mark Hollis, men's basketball coach Tom Izzo, and former athletic director Ron Mason) was a member of the Selection Team that brought Head Football Coach Mark Dantonio to Michigan State.
Originally, Gates enrolled at Michigan State University wanting to play football under then-coach Nick Saban as well as basketball under coach Tom Izzo but upon enrolling Saban wanted him to play only football.
Future Michigan State head coaching leged Tom Izzo was head basketball coach at Ishpeming High School from 1977-78.
