Wesner's career was closely linked to the vaudeville impresario Tony Pastor, for whom she was the featured male impersonator, performing at Pastor's theater and touring in traveling shows he organized.

The theater district was moving uptown to Union Square, however, and in 1881 Pastor took a lease on the former Germania Theatre on 14th Street in the same building that housed Tammany Hall.

A number of noted jazz musicians played in Wylie's orchestra, such as Jack Jenney, Tony Pastor, Nate Kazebier, Spud Murphy, Bill Stegmeyer, Joe Bishop, Billy Butterfield, Johnnie Davis, Vaughn Monroe, Claude Thornhill, and Artie Shaw.
