In 1890, de Foucauld joined the Cistercian Trappist order first in France and then at Akbès on the Syrian-Turkish border, but left in 1897 to follow an undefined religious vocation in Nazareth.
Rogersville is the home of two Trappist (Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance) monasteries, Notre-Dame de l'Assomption Abbey (Our Lady of the Assumption Abbey for women) and Notre Dame du Calvaire Abbey (Our Lady of Calvary Abbey for men).
