The old Tryon County courthouse, later the Montgomery County courthouse, became the Fulton County Courthouse, where it is the oldest operating courthouse in New York.
Old English District was one of the districts of Tryon County when it was set off from Albany County, in the American colony of New York, on March 12, 1772.

Whereas Dobbs County and Tryon County, named for Martin's predecessors Arthur Dobbs and William Tryon, were abolished after American independence, Martin County was neither abolished nor renamed, a fact which has been attributed to the popularity of Alexander Martin, twice governor of the state (1782-1784, 1789-1792).
When he learned of the siege of Fort Stanwix to the west in late July 1777, he ordered the Tryon County militia to assemble at Fort Dayton.
